Lisbon-based record label and booking agency and home to the most exciting of Portuguese jazz and improvised music. Nischo represents a unique mix of artists detached from fixed genres, including vocalist and composer Sara Serpa, accordionist João Barradas, guitarist André Fernandes or drummer and composer Pedro Melo Alves and The Rite of Trio – all critically acclaimed in their own right.
The name Nischo reflects its origins and its purpose in a single word. Derived from the word niche, it might describe a recess to find shelter or a lifestyle with unique conditions and needs to grow and flourish from an ecological point of view, or even a segment still little explored in an economic market. The word niche is easy to find, with slight nuances, in so many European languages echoes the international radius and European context that Nischo pretends to set as its sphere of activity.
In 2022, Nischo will focus on showcasing and exporting Portuguese jazz. With this goal in mind, Nischo aims at consolidating an artist collective that can develop individual projects as well as creating and performing together. Like that, Nischo functions as a collaborative entity with a strong sense of esthetics in which each individual creation can represent the collective identity. Nischo aspires to represent an artistic movement and a new generation of Portuguese musicians that want to be in touch with other artists with the same visions. As a company founded on multiculturalism, Nischo wants to pay close attention to aspects of gender and equality in order to be part of new solutions both in the musical and in the social sphere.
